Throughout history, legends about fox spirits have almost always been associated with unflattering tales of deception and harm. They are described as a treacherous, cunning, untrustworthy species. But has anyone heard the old story of a little fox spirit that sacrificed itself to save Lê Thái Tổ's life, back before he became emperor?
This was when the Lam Sơn insurgent army had not yet grown strong. Pursued by Ming troops, Lê Lợi fled deep into the forest and happened upon the body of a girl in a white skirt lying dead on the grass. Moved by compassion, the king used his sword to dig a grave and bury her carefully, then hurried to hide at the base of a banyan tree beside the road. When the enemy brought dogs to the king's hiding place, a small fox spirit suddenly appeared from nowhere and distracted the troops, allowing the king to escape.
And that is what the history books record.
However, behind it lies an even more intriguing story about a little fox spirit who fell in love with the king. Ultimately, wishing to follow him, she became a Guardian Deity.
Would you, Sử Hộ Vương, be willing to hear more?
