One summer afternoon, the ambassador team visited little Thùy's family in Long An. We were welcomed by Thùy's angelic face and her family's warmth and friendliness. Although the conversation lasted only a little over 1 hour, the team and Thùy truly connected through the energy of love, faith, and hope.
Thùy is a little girl with very bright eyes—I have never met anyone with eyes as bright as hers. Though we had just met, we immediately recognized her introspective, affectionate nature. Her mother said: “When she was 4, she once saw a lottery-ticket seller standing outside a temple and begged me for money to give him.” It was only a few thousand, enough for another meal. It would have been okay not to help, but the generosity behind it is precious. Life is giving, not merely receiving for oneself!
Thùy loves hugging her mother. Throughout our conversation, she kept looking at her and nestling in her lap. As her mother told her story and cried, the girl sat silently beside her and cried too, unable to speak. Asked about her greatest happiness, she simply said going out with her parents. When discussing her dreams, however, she kept crying, and we did not understand why. After she shared, we understood those tears: she wished to be healthy and spend her whole life with her mother. The question about her wish had touched the fear caused by her illness. We encouraged her and shared reassuring beliefs with her subconscious: her mother was still there, and whatever happened, she would live her whole life with her mother. Hearing this, Thùy wiped away her tears and smiled faintly. From then on, she smiled more, her face becoming happier and brighter.
Saying goodbye to little Thùy's family, we could not help feeling emotional. Thùy is only 9 but has already endured great physical and emotional pain. Her illness has also required her mother to remain strong, so she can be a source of support and give Thùy strength to fight the disease. Yet we also realized that, however hard life may be and however many worries they currently face, her family will never lose faith in the brightest possibilities. That faith is like a living shoot in an arid desert, helping the whole family find greater peace and confidence.
