Pictured is Tom Chi, former head of user experience design at Google [x]—a guest at “A New Hope,” organized by YUP (http://yup.edu.vn) held in Ho Chi Minh City (bringing together around 20 social and technology entrepreneurs from around the world as speakers, including Megan Smith, Google's vice president — now the CTO of… the United States).
I will tell the story of Megan Smith later; back to Tom Chi and the journey of creating Google Glass. The entrepreneurs in our delegation regarded Tom Chi as a “Genius” in Rapid Prototyping. This was also the topic he taught young business owners at that day’s event, essential for anyone wanting to start a business or create innovative models to solve social problems.
Tom Chi is also the person in charge of the Google Glass project, which we have heard so much about in the press.
When Tom Chi asked the entire auditorium, “Can you guess how long it took me to prototype these Google Glass?”, people eagerly raised their hands to answer.
-3 years – the first person said
-7 years – the second person was very confident
-6 months – the third person wanted to make a surprising guess
-I think 1.5 years – the fourth person was more cautious
Tom Chi shook his head at every answer.
Then he raised one finger.
-Ah, so it only took you 1 year to make the Prototype for these glasses!
Tom Chi shook his head.
-1 month? Unbelievable!
Tom Chi shook his head again.
-All right. We give up. It took you 1 week. What a genius!
Tom Chi shook his head again.
-We truly do not understand…
-1 day (one day) – Tom Chi replied coolly.
And then he showed slides demonstrating how he had done it in one day.
If you missed that wonderful event organized by YUP (http://yup.edu.vn/x-startup) organized it, but thanks to the internet, you can now watch a shorter version of Tom Chi's presentation in the following clip:
