Each event seems to unfold before my eyes<\/p>\n

The northern power defeated H\u1ed3 Qu\u00fd Ly and ruled our country.<\/p>\n

With Lam S\u01a1n as his base and the Thu\u1eadn Thi\u00ean Sword in hand, L\u00ea L\u1ee3i launched an uprising to regain national independence and founded the L\u00ea dynasty.<\/p>\n

The L\u00ea dynasty lost real power, while the Tr\u1ecbnh and Nguy\u1ec5n lords were unmatched in the north and south respectively. The country entered civil war, the Tr\u1ecbnh\u2013Nguy\u1ec5n conflict.<\/p>\n

The times create heroes. This exceptionally special period in the nation's history witnessed many talented people, but above all stood two men with a deep feud between them.<\/p>\n

The Nguy\u1ec5n dynasty weakened. This time, using T\u00e2y S\u01a1n as their base, the 3 brothers Nguy\u1ec5n Nh\u1ea1c \u2013 Nguy\u1ec5n Hu\u1ec7 (later King Quang Trung) \u2013 Nguy\u1ec5n L\u1eef raised an army in rebellion. Just as the Three Kingdoms era had its \u201cThree Heroes\u201d (Liu Bei \u2013 Guan Yu \u2013 Zhang Fei), our country at this time had the \u201cThree Great Heroes\u201d of T\u00e2y S\u01a1n.<\/p>\n

That uprising caused a child only a few years old to lose his father, then later witness his entire Nguy\u1ec5n royal clan massacred. He nurtured a \u201cwill\u201d for revenge and to restore and revive the family.<\/p>\n

That child was Nguy\u1ec5n \u00c1nh (later Emperor Gia Long).<\/p>\n

Quang Trung Nguy\u1ec5n Hu\u1ec7 was a military genius, victorious wherever he fought. Gia Long Nguy\u1ec5n \u00c1nh was also a rare prodigy, commanding armies and displaying battlefield authority while still in his teens.<\/p>\n

Although evenly matched rivals, Hu\u1ec7 always won their battles. Hu\u1ec7 won everything but lost the final battle, called Fate.<\/p>\n

Hu\u1ec7 crushed \u00c1nh. Despite his rare talent, \u00c1nh had to hide, flee abroad, and endure countless hardships, \u201csleeping on thorns and tasting gall,\u201d as long as he remained Alive.<\/p>\n

\u00c1nh's greatest talent was always Surviving. Through one event or another, one act of help or another, one miracle or another, \u00c1nh stayed alive. In the Three Kingdoms era, Heaven would not let Liang kill Yi. In this era, Heaven would not let Hu\u1ec7 kill \u00c1nh. Every time he was defeated, using Gia \u0110\u1ecbnh (Saigon) as his base, \u00c1nh quickly rebuilt his army within months.<\/p>\n

Hu\u1ec7 conquered almost the entire country, leaving only the southern \u201cbone,\u201d Gia Dinh, that he could never finish gnawing. Hu\u1ec7 became obsessed with \u00c1nh. That is why they were evenly matched archrivals.<\/p>\n

By the final battle, Hu\u1ec7 had devised a formation that would attack head-on while sending troops around to strike Gia \u0110\u1ecbnh from \u201cbehind,\u201d leaving no one able to escape. So tight that not even a fly could get away: \u00c1nh was certain to be killed. The plan was complete. Before carrying out that battle, Hu\u1ec7 died. Age 39.<\/p>\n

Before his death, Hu\u1ec7's greatest fear was that \u00c1nh would slaughter his T\u00e2y S\u01a1n family.<\/p>\n

\u00c1nh acted no differently at all.<\/p>\n

The T\u00e2y S\u01a1n dynasty lasted only a little over a decade before collapsing. With no worthy rival remaining, Nguy\u1ec5n \u00c1nh conducted military campaigns over a few years, ended the civil war, unified the country, and founded the Nguy\u1ec5n dynasty, which ruled for nearly 150 years. Our country officially took the name Vietnam under \u00c1nh. He adopted the royal name Gia Long, signifying the unifier from Gia \u0110\u1ecbnh in the south to Th\u0103ng Long in the north. History called his name; Heaven \u2018chose\u2019 \u00c1nh as the nation's true unifier.<\/p>\n

After 25 years of prolonged struggle, carrying his family's grievance and enduring countless torments deep in his heart, \u00c1nh finally won, took revenge, revived his ancestors' legacy, and restored the Nguy\u1ec5n house.<\/p>\n

Today's history favors Hu\u1ec7 and \u201cputs down\u201d \u00c1nh, even in the history books we studied as children. Yet from broader perspectives, both deserve to be called Big Men. Hu\u1ec7 defeated Siamese forces and routed the Qing, \u201cstunning\u201d Qianlong and thrilling the people. The \u201cglory\u201d of those two battles makes it easy to love Hu\u1ec7 and hate \u00c1nh. Later, even the Nguy\u1ec5n dynasty's attempts to make people forget T\u00e2y S\u01a1n's \u201cplain-clothed hero\u201d failed.<\/p>\n

When will this cycle of hatred ever end? While alive, Hu\u1ec7 changed his surname to Nguy\u1ec5n to gain \u201clegitimacy\u201d and make launching his uprising easier. Later, he not only massacred \u00c1nh's entire family but, to sever his lifelong rival's \u201cfeng shui\u201d fortune, dug up \u00c1nh's father's grave, crushed his bones and scattered them in the river. Not stopping there, Hu\u1ec7 also dug up the graves of 8 preceding generations of Nguy\u1ec5n rulers, not even sparing the dead.<\/p>\n

\u00c1nh could not let it go. Upon ascending the throne, Gia Long said, \u2018I take revenge for 9 generations,\u2019 leaving not a single generation uncounted. Then it was the entire T\u00e2y S\u01a1n dynasty\u2019s turn to be massacred. \u00c1nh also found Hu\u1ec7\u2019s grave, opened it, dragged out his remains, crushed them into a pot and ordered soldiers to urinate into it. His skull was used as a urine container. The remains of the commoner hero and his wife were imprisoned in a dungeon, bound with iron chains and spells. His son, the king, was torn apart by elephants.<\/p>\n

What good is hatred? The Nguy\u1ec5n dynasty later gradually closed its borders and ports, only to be colonized by the French themselves.<\/p>\n

How heartbreaking the tragedy of Quang Trung Nguy\u1ec5n Hu\u1ec7 and Gia Long Nguy\u1ec5n \u00c1nh. They were Great Men, yet the chaos of war and the negative emotions of hatred swallowed them both.<\/p>\n
