Over 1 year ago, during a trip to Israel, I remember the Jewish belief that to succeed in the new era, you need the qualities of 3 groups: Entrepreneurs, Farmers, and Warriors.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The more I reflect on this, the truer it seems! We need to work hard and show the perseverance of farmers; be intelligent, organized and visionary like entrepreneurs; and have the burning passion, willingness to roll up our sleeves and commitment of warriors.Gone are the days when farmers only needed to be hardworking, \u201cfaces to the soil and backs to the sky,\u201d concerned with today without knowing what tomorrow holds, using a \u201cquick harvest\u201d approach that produces \u201ctemporary\u201d results. If we keep doing that, we will be very slow. I remember that Vietnam is the world's number 1 coffee exporter, yet we retain less than 5% of coffee's profit value and occupy the lowest part of the value chain. Something seems \u201cnot quite right\u201d when a number 1 country, doing the \u201chardest\u201d part \u2014 production \u2014 retains less than 5%, while other countries handle branding, distribution, packaging\u2026 better and retain as much as 95%. Farmers today therefore also need vision, organization, work plans, an understanding of simple financial and economic figures, the ability to hire and use labor when needed, and the ability to apply innovative science and technology to their work to increase productivity. They must know how to add value to their products and have a sense of responsibility \u2014 \u201cthe self within the collective\u201d \u2014 protecting the environment and contributing to society's overall development. Today's farmers are no different from entrepreneurs: they too need entrepreneurial qualities and skills.<\/p>\n

So \u2018turning farmers into entrepreneurs\u2019 is important work.<\/p>\n

The 95-5 figure easily makes us think of \u201cinjustice.\u201d And that is a new form of \u201ccolonialism.\u201d But no: through contact, observation, and accompaniment, I realized that we reap what we sow. When we are slow and stagnant, we lose our advantage. \u201cBlame yourself before blaming others.\u201d<\/p>\n

That is why I value highly practical programs such as Nescaf\u00e9 Plan, which I shared in a previous article, and volunteer to \u201cspread the word\u201d so we can learn together. They have created and continue creating measurable results that many NGOs, NPOs, and social enterprises may not achieve as well, for many resource-related reasons!<\/p>\n

This shows how clever those \u2018dying capitalists\u2019 really are. There are still corporations that follow \u2018Business ethics\u2019 principles. Nestl\u00e9 and Nescaf\u00e9 have introduced programs that go beyond CSR to CSV (Creating Shared Values). They show that if a large corporation with enormous resources cares about win-win values, shared values among the many groups participating in its business model, and synergistic benefits\u2014\u2018If I succeed, I do not want you struggling below me; I commit to reinvesting resources so you can flourish too, because I am also thinking of myself: I will secure quality supply and my distribution system, all for consumers\u2019 benefit\u2019\u2014then such corporations can create enormous social impact.<\/p>\n

During my recent journey to Bu\u00f4n Ma Thu\u1ed9t, I had the opportunity to visit \u201cfarmer entrepreneur\u201d Nguy\u1ec5n Ch\u00ed Thanh in Village 13, Ea Ktur Commune, C\u01b0 Kuin District, \u0110\u1eafc L\u1eafc Province. He had participated in and received support from the Nescaf\u00e9 Plan for 4 years. Unfortunately, I have no photo with him. He now interplants coffee with pepper, following the program experts' guidance and training, increasing yields while saving considerable water and costs. This has produced \u201cenviable\u201d results: after a modest initial investment, each hectare now brings him an average of 500 million a year, with total costs no higher than 100 million. He has 3 hectares like that and shakes his head at every purchase offer. I calculated: a farmer earning an 80% net profit margin\u2014that is huge! I can only hope that my students following the SME path (which can generate immediate cash flow and profit, unlike startups, which focus more on company value) can achieve such efficiency (depending on the industry, of course). It tempted me too! (But I will focus on my own path first.)<\/p>\n

Of course, things do not become favorable immediately; do not imagine that everything is easy. But I did manage to get Mr. Thanh's phone number so that, in the future, any of my students in the Central Highlands who want to learn from the model\u2014learning for real and doing for real\u2014will have somewhere to turn! :- )<\/p>\n
