\u201cI love two things: books and beautiful women.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was my opening remark at a seminar I attended last Sunday.<\/p>\n

I love reading,<\/p>\n

And I also love lending books.<\/p>\n

I have a habit of underlining, highlighting and filling the pages and flyleaves of books with notes. It is a way of organizing what I learn. Thanks to this habit, a book that takes me 3 hours to read the first time takes only 30 minutes to revisit using those underlined summaries.<\/p>\n

After finishing a book, I also tend to write a few lines on its flyleaf, then add my signature and the date.<\/p>\n

For this reason, I can feel hesitant about lending someone a book that is no longer pristine and looks rather worn. Should making future reference easier for myself prevent me from giving, from lending books to others?<\/p>\n

Yet I felt completely at ease.<\/p>\n

The reason was that I only needed to make one very small improvement.<\/p>\n

I ask borrowers to write their thoughts and opinions in the book as they read, putting their names before each note so that we can tell them apart.<\/p>\n

They can then note on the final page how many annotations they have made and on which pages. This part is optional.<\/p>\n

At the very least, borrowers should write a few lines on the flyleaf about how the book made them feel, what they learned, or anything they feel compelled to put into words after reading it, followed by their signature and the date.<\/p>\n

I call this game \u201cJourney Of Books\u201d \u2013 \u201cThe Adventure of the Books.\u201d<\/p>\n

Imagine, 10 years from now,<\/p>\n

Or when I grow old,<\/p>\n

I open a book and look at its flyleaf:<\/p>\n

\u201cI will reread this book many times; it carries enduring values and lessons \u2013 Minh Tu\u1ea5n \u2013 20\/5\/08\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you, dear Tu\u1ea5n, for lending me this book \u2013 Th\u1ea3o \u2013 21\/7\/08\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis book truly startled Minh awake and into action \u2013 Minh \u2013 3\/4\/09\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cH\u1ea3i made some particularly meaningful notes on page 52 of this book \u2013 H\u1ea3i \u2013 6\/7\/09\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBesides this book, please read \u2026 by \u2026; it will greatly complement the knowledge in this book \u2013 Ho\u00e0ng \u2013 1\/12\/09\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHo\u00e0ng borrowed this book, then Khi\u00eam borrowed it from Ho\u00e0ng. Khi\u00eam will lend it to Ng\u1ecdc next. This book is so good \u2013 Khi\u00eam \u2013 2\/2\/10\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe book that changed my life \u2013 Ng\u1ecdc \u2013 15\/3\/10\u201d<\/p>\n

I could now \u201ckeep track\u201d: I knew who had held this book, when they had it, what they felt and what they thought, and I treasured it all.<\/p>\n

Those are Memories.<\/p>\n

That is Fun: a small pleasure in everyday life. If we can make every page more interesting, more surprising and more valuable, and give ourselves even more reasons to read it again, why wouldn't we?<\/p>\n

It is also the \u201cWisdom of the Crowd.\u201d How wonderful that a book, once an expression of its author's perspective and worldview, can become a forum for discussion among the many people whose hands it has passed through, with contrasting and complementary viewpoints. That is where the value of knowledge lies :-)<\/p>\n

And so, the books begin their journey.<\/p>\n
